Symposia

Once a year, the PhD candidates and postdocs have the possibility to exchange scientifically and share the progress of their research studies with other members of the Graduate School for Materials Science. The aim of the 2-day event is to create an excellent opportunity to network with other scientists and to generate and use synergetic effects within the field. Therefore, most parts of the programme are covered by contributions of the PhD candidates and postdocs themselves.

To enable workshops and lab tours in TUHH and HZG laboratories, the event takes place at both affiliations, one day at each site.

3rd Symposium

This year's symposium will take place from 29 to 30 November. There will again be a varied programme for the participants, where they can exchange ideas and network.

On 30 November and 01 December 2017, PhD candidates and postdocs came together at TUHH and HZG for the 2nd Symposium of the Graduate School for Materials Science. The event offered young scientists the opportunity to present their own research and exchange ideas, approaches and solutions with colleagues from the fields of materials science.

The first day at TUHH provided lab visits conducted by the participants, poster sessions and discussions as well as an interactive quiz given by one of the participants. The aim of this quiz was to give the participants the chance to test their knowledge in materials science.

The discussions during the poster session were particularly of interest for most of the participants as they were able to exchange ideas and solutions for their research projects. Additionally, a prize for the best poster was awarded. Sihang You, a PhD candidate from HZG, convinced the jury out of all participants with the design and presentation of his poster.

On 17 and 18 November 2016, PhD candidates and postdocs came together at TUHH and HZG for the 1st Symposium of the Graduate School for Materials Science. The agenda offered various formats for scientific exchange and information on career options.

The first day at TUHH provided lab visits conducted by the participants, poster sessions and discussions as well as talks given by industry representatives. For most of the participants, the discussions at the posters were particularly of interest as they were useful for the respective research projects. Besides the scientific part, a prize for the best poster was awarded. Sergey Chupakhin from HZG convinced the jury out of all participants with the design and presentation of his poster.

On the second day at HZG, scientific lectures and further lab visits given by the participants were high on the agenda. A talk on James Bond and Materials Science by Prof. Dr. Thomas Klassen (Board of Directors of ZHM, Head of the Division “Materials Technology”, HZG,
Institute of Materials Technology, Helmut Schmidt University, Hamburg) and the get-together rounded the programme in the afternoon. According to the feedback of the participants, the demonstrations in the labs were particularly interesting.
