From 23 to 26 August 2019 the Symposium "Atomistic Modeling in Materials Science" took place on the German island of Sylt, involving work groups from Hamburg University of Technology, University Bremen as well as University of Erlangen–Nuremberg. Surrounded by sunshine, beaches and a social atmosphere, over 25 participants enjoyed sophisticated talks and scientific discussions related to materials science. Aside from the scientific program, the participants used their leisure time for walking the island, as well as exploring the sea in activities such as swimming or wind surfing.

During the three-day symposium, a platform for scientific exchange could be created that helped to build new and promote existing collaborations. The mixture of new PhD students with experienced and established researchers made it possible to efficiently share expertise and knowledge, maximizing the benefit for everybody and rendering the symposium a great success.

The symposium was funded by the WE-Heraeus foundation. Members of the Institute of Polymer and Composites and the Institute of Advanced Ceramics at the TUHH were part of the organizing committee.
