Centre for Advanced Materials

The Centre for Advanced Materials is an internal collaboration between the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon. The Centre for Advanced Materials sustains the collaboration within the SFB 986 between the TUHH and the Hereon in the field of materials science in an institutional setting.

During its initial stages, the new research network was mainly composed of researchers of the Advanced Engineering Materials program at the Hereon and the members of the SFB 986. However, the Centre is open to the admission of new colleagues and to the inclusion of additional institutions.

The main goal of the Centre is to take advantage of existing synergies in order to establish new collaborations and to initiate joint projects. This will lead to not only an increased visibility of materials science but also an additional benefit for research. Moreover, the Centre is financially supported by 100 k€ per partner institution per year.

Novel materials developed by the Centre are characterized by a multisectoral spectrum of applications and are the key to innovative system-oriented solutions for numerous areas of technology. By doing so, they help in strengthening Germany as a location for industry. The choice and development of materials are governed by scientific challenges and technical needs, which are of central importance for many areas of applications:

  • Improvement of strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight ratios of lightweight construction materials
  • Improvement of high temperature durability of lightweight construction materials
  • Joining of tailormade materials into hybrid construction elements and damage-tolerant lightweight structures
  • (Multi-)functionalization of materials (e.g. biodegradability, integration of functions into structure materials)

On February 11, 2015, the Hamburg University of Technology and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon were joined by representatives of politics in launching the new research network “Centre for Advanced Materials”. “The new Centre for Advanced Materials is a consistent enhancement of the intense materials science collaboration between the Hamburg University of Technology and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon. At the same time, it is exemplary of strategic science advancement across borders.”, said Dr. Dorothee Stapelfeldt, Hamburg’s Science Senator. Science Minister of Schleswig-Holstein, Kristin Alheit, underlined: “The new research network adds to the increase in scientific excellence of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon and the University of Technology. It showcases the good collaboration in research and science between Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein.”
